The components I assemble are small, precise, and expensive, and on my first day I was terrified of ruining one.

That's a bad state to learn precision work in. The job demands steady hands and total focus, and instead I was tense, hyper-aware that every piece in front of me cost real money and that a wrong move meant scrap. New people always damaged units while learning — it was just accepted as the cost of training. But every damaged unit was money gone, and every one chipped away at the new person's confidence, which made the next mistake more likely. Learning precision work on expensive real components is a trap: the fear of ruining them is exactly what makes you ruin them.

I learned the assembly a completely different way: I did it forty times in VR before I touched a single real component.

In the simulation, I assembled the unit over and over. I fumbled the early attempts — got the sequence wrong, placed things imprecisely, "damaged" virtual components that cost nothing. I made every beginner's mistake dozens of times, for free, until my hands knew the sequence cold and the fumbling stopped. By attempt forty, the assembly was muscle memory. I wasn't thinking about the steps anymore; my hands just did them, smoothly, correctly.

Then I sat down at the real station, and it was the forty-first time, not the first. The fear wasn't there, because I wasn't a beginner anymore — I'd just done this correctly dozens of times. My hands were steady because they already knew the work. I didn't ruin a single real component, not because I was lucky, but because I'd done all my ruining where ruining was free.

That's the thing about repeatability with expensive work: it moves the inevitable beginner's mistakes off the real components and onto virtual ones. The mistakes still happen — they have to, that's how you learn — but they happen forty times in a place where they cost nothing, instead of on the line where each one is money and a dent in your nerve.

Forty practice runs that cost the company nothing saved who-knows-how-many ruined units and gave them a worker who was good from his first real day. I started the actual job already past the part where everyone used to break things. That's a better way to begin.
