We Argued Over a Drawing for Weeks
A design engineer on the weeks lost arguing about a flat drawing everyone interpreted differently — until the team finally walked around the thing at full scale.

We once argued about a component for three weeks, and the entire argument existed only because we were all looking at a flat drawing.
Everyone in that room was experienced. Everyone was looking at the same 2D drawing. And everyone had a slightly different three-dimensional object in their head, because a drawing is a flattened shadow of a real thing, and each of us was mentally reconstructing it differently. So we argued — about clearances, about how a part would actually sit, about whether two components would interfere — and we couldn't resolve it, because we were debating our own mental reconstructions, not the thing itself. Weeks. On something that turned out to be obvious the moment we could actually see it in three dimensions.
That was the old cost of flat design review. Either you argue endlessly over drawings everyone interprets differently, or you spend a fortune building a physical prototype just to *check* something — and then you find the problem, scrap the prototype, and build another. Each loop costs real money and real weeks. And half the prototypes existed only to answer a question that a true 3D view would have answered for free.
Reviewing the design in VR, at full scale, ended arguments that drawings had kept alive for weeks.
We put the actual 3D model in a shared space and walked around it. At real size. And the three-week argument dissolved in about five minutes, because now we weren't debating our imaginations — we were all looking at the same real object, from every angle, together. The clearance question everyone had a different opinion on? We just looked. There it was. Obvious. The interference we'd been worried about? We could see exactly whether it happened. No drawing, no prototype, no scrap. Just the thing itself, examined together before a single rupee was spent on tooling.
The prototypes we still build are the ones worth building. The dozens we used to build just to "check something" — to settle a question a 3D view answers instantly — those are gone. We catch the problems in the virtual review, at true scale, while changing them is free.
I think about those three weeks sometimes. Smart people, arguing hard, all completely sincere — and all looking at a flat shadow of the truth. We don't argue about shadows anymore. We walk around the real thing.
